Palestinian teenagers work straightening steel rebars December 15, 2009 that they salvaged from the ruins of homes and buildings destroyed during the Israeli military "Operation Cast Lead" a year ago in the Abed Rabbo area of Gaza. Ironically, last year's offensive had the unlikely benefit of creating employment for thousands of young Gazans who now work daily clearing debris, salvaging rebar and recycling the ruins into new construction materials. The salvaged and straightened rebar is then sold in bulk at significantly cheaper rates than new rebar, which must be smuggled in thru tunnels along with other building supplies due to the ongoing Israeli and Egyptian border blockade meant to pressure HAMAS.
