HAMAS border police trainees quickly flee their base December 22, 2009 at the City of Arafat Police headquarters in Gaza City, Gaza following an overhead flight by an Israeli fighter jet. The HAMAS police force was one of the main targets of the 22 day Israeli offensive a year ago and lost more than 150 members on the first day of strikes alone. The past year has seen HAMAS slowly rebuild its capacity, although the organization is careful not to congregate in large groups and only trains now in small numbers to avoid being an easy target again. Daily across the strip, HAMAS evacuates its offices if it hears or sees any Israeli aircraft in the skies above.
